Freshwater aquarium fishes

Freshwater aquarium fishes may be defined as those species whose natural habitat is in freshwater rivers or lakes, yet they may be kept satisfactorily in the somewhat artificial conditions of an aquarium. Many of the species originated in warm tropical or subtropical regions, and these fishes need more care and attention than do coldwater types such as the goldfish or tench, which may also be kept in an aquarium. As a very broad rule it may be said that the tropical freshwater species are more colourful than the coldwater type, and are of smaller size, permitting a greater number and variety of fishes to be kept in an aquarium of average size.
